Differences in laser welding of different steel materials

Laser welding machine is a non-contact welding method, through the concentration of light so that the energy of light in the focal point in order to achieve welding, molten pool. Because different materials have different absorption of light; material thickness is different. Steel material is a contemporary industrial use more widely used application of a material, laser welding technology in the application of steel materials is more mature. But different steel materials for laser welding will still be very different.

Carbon steel and ordinary alloy steel laser welding: In most cases, carbon steel laser welding effect is good, its welding quality depends on the impurity content. As in other welding processes, sulfur and phosphorus are sensitive factors in the production of weld cracks. In general, laser welding of stainless steel is easier to obtain joints than conventional welding. Due to the high welding speeds the heat affected zone is small and sensitization does not become an important issue. The low thermal conductivity of stainless steel makes it easier to obtain deep fusion narrow welds compared to carbon steel.

In order to obtain satisfactory weld quality, preheating is required when the carbon content exceeds 0.25%. When different carbon content of steel welding each other, the torch can be slightly biased towards the side of the low carbon material to ensure the quality of the joint. Low-carbon boiling steel is not -suitable for laser welding due to its high sulfur and phosphorus content. Low-carbon sedentary steel due to the low content of impurities, the welding effect is very good. Medium and high carbon steels and common alloy steels can be laser welded well, but require preheating and post-weld treatment to eliminate stress and avoid crack formation.
